Thomas Fehlmann follows up his critically acclaimed album ‘Lowflow’ with a new full length release on Kompakt. ‘Honigpumpe’ (‘Honey Pump’ in English) will be released in May.
After a busy year with THE ORB following ?Okie Dokie…?s release and a few fabulous concerts in selected corners of the world, Fehlmann has returned with a slice of his very own work on Kompakt: the EP ?EMO PACK? packed in a misterious sleeve. the image shows the remains of an accident of Formula1 driver Ralf Schuhmacher crashing into a wall in Indianapolis in 2003. This points to a main workingmethod of Fehlmann, his playfull but non ironic use of references and quotes. musically his reocuring theme seems to be THE FLOW: melting beaming harmonies over minimal drums to a pulsating vibrant lifejuice. He is on a constant tour, and ?EMO PACK? reflects what has been going on, on that stage. Recently in Japan Fehlmann also extended his set up to two hours with the introduction of material from his ?Lowflow? album, released on Plug Research in 2004, creating a long big wave from downbeat to his very own brand of – in the words of the vllage voice – green house.
The essential roots of Thomas? almost 30 year long career lie in his work with German avantgard band PALAIS SCHAUMBURG and his co-founding partner Holger Hiller. In the late-‘80s producing as READY MADE plus operating the revered imprint TEUTONIC BEATS where he relesed the frist german compilations with a straight bassdrum. In the nineties there’s the defining Berlin-Detroit connecting act 3MB (together with BASIC CHANNEL’s MORITZ VON OSWALD and JUAN ATKINS) and he started a fruitfull partnership with Alex Paterson and THE ORB. To various extents he collaborated on all ORB albums and took part in the creation of the seminal experimental masterpiece ?FFWD? with Robert Fripp and then ORB sidekick Kris Weston aka Trash. He produces a weekly radio show – OceanClubRadio – with Gudrun Gut and has been responsible for countless remixes and productions for a eclectic selection of artists ranging from Erasure to Einstuerzende Neubauten.
