CARI LEKEBUSCH Exclusive Interview 2011 (English Version)

CARI LEKEBUSCH Exclusive Interview 2011 (English Version)1- What is the first word that comes out of your head right now ?
CARI: ROLAND TR-727 latin percussion rhythm composer! http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/727.php

2- Do you feel more ZEN or HIPPIE ?
CARI: Slightly more towards technologic Zen, with a twist of B-Boy and some funky Mantis Religiosa =P

3- Can you deeply tell us why Stockholm have been one of the greatest techno lands of the planet? maybe is the surroundings, maybe are the musical roots, maybe an artistical society? put Stockholm with a good description on our mental maps :)
CARI: Bulls-eye! Si, it is the enviroment, the surroundings, the vivid artistic culture and society (there a studio in almost every building), long dark cold winters and both mystical, as well as odd humourous roots.

4- What vynil was your first MODERN dancefloor killer? tell us more about the rush of that times.
CARI: We used to breakdance to Electro and early Techno back in 1982-1987, one of my favourites during that period was “Numbers” by Kraftwerk, and everything by Chris the Glove Taylor, Man Parrish and Mantronix. Around 1987-1990 it was mainly Acid House and Detroit techno on my plate. Classic dancefloor bombs like “Voodoo ray” by A Guy Called Gerald. 1991-1994 was pretty dominated by labels like Harthouse, Djax-Up and R&S Records where artists like Joey Beltram, Roberth Leiner, Cisco Ferreira, Hardfloor & Kenny Larkin where frequent. And after that around 1995 a swedish sound form of techno also established itself on the global scene.

5- Cats come back to the house to drink some milk. Whats the most difficult part of life that don’t let us drink milk all the time. And why do you think this happens. For a reason, destiny or new conclusion?
CARI: You just cant have the one without the other. Our reality is based upon dynamic tensions, the universe demands variety on a fundamental level. If you drink milk all the time you will get sick of it, humans need variations in food, feelings, companionship and experiences to grow.

6- You look like the classic prototype of an old school techno agent of time. What it feels to be rediscovered by the new generations and how they influence you to generate new things? are you the type of dj who are always hungry and looking at whats happening on the globe? or more like an animal who just let the instinct flow through everybody and everything ?
CARI: I am very interested to learn new techniques, styles, concepts and ideas. So i watch the global scene frequently and do my scannings weekly. Putting all the new, the old, the good, the bad and the ugly in my blender and shake it until its a tasty molecular hot sauce :D Best served fresh, bon apetit :D

7- Why do you think music archeology is useful these days ;)
CARI: Just like all history it is fundamental to us. Without knowing where we came from, how should we know where to go? We could just be going around in circles repeating the same mistakes for example :/ And standing still is NOT an option!

CARI LEKEBUSCH Exclusive Interview 2011 (English Version)8- We know you are a human laboratory! what was your weirdest experiment you did with music?
CARI: Well its not really all that weird from my point of view. Most sounds and sequences sound all dry and boring when you start working on them. But after a massive chain of effect units and sound processors youll get to a point where you can make the sounds really nice and weird. With automations and modulations. But it’s not like i try to make sound’s by janking the tail of a cat, or maybe figure out what can be done with a vacuum cleaner ….

9- And the coolest one you never forget, a great moment of improvisation with results or your latest project on trying new things ?
CARI: I guess im to far down the rabbit hole of production to even be able to explain exactly what i mean, to a general public not experimenting with this as well. De La Soul, from New York once put it very well “Got to much funky shit inside my brain, that i just could’nt explain”. =D

10- How do you balance between nature and the urban, the industrial and the sexuality. Your nowadays sound for us in Latinamerica sound much more “HOT” than before. Can you tell us a little about, when or how an artist bolt the reins, get a groove and change the feeling of the histories.
CARI: Like i mentioned earlier, the universe demands variety and ive been experimenting with many different sound frames. Way back i used to have several pseudonymes and group names to spread my various sound’s on. But nowadays i try to focus more into a unified way that is more open and dynamic. So you get a nice mix of the HOT and the COOL :D

11- So is better to stop with the “aka thing” and just be as diverse and crossover as you can, right now cos the flood ?
CARI: I would guess it’s best to focus on one artist name with a certain type of sound. There are so many labels and producers flooding the scene with productions and that makes it difficult to get noticed. Some try to use spamm tactics with a new release every week, wich is probably not the best solution. One has to be very clever to survive in these days of information overload.

12- Apart of the democratization of technology, more pointing into the musical imaginary, house reborn and Internet, what are the good, the bad and the horrible of 2010-2011-2012. Compared to 10-20 years ago.
CARI: From a DJ and producers point of view i can see significant improvements. It is much easier and affordable to obtain a studio setup nowadays, as well as to learn how to use the various equipments. Overall the sound technology has improved much during the last 20 years, and there are more and better DJ mixers, PA systems and experienced engineers out there. One downside is maybe that it is hard for producers that can’t or don’t want to travel and perform live, to survive, by only creating music.

13- First time in Colombia, what you know about us, what are your weapons for this war of musical peace!
CARI: All my artist friends tell me that people in Colombia have been well educated in the history of Techno. So i am not the slightest bit worried that they would not approve of my sound architecture. It will be very interesting and i hope to learn many new things about Colombian’s thought on music, culture, food, dance and all the great thingäs in life :D

14- To end add a word in front of each concept:
CARI: Not sure if i understood this right; let me try this;

GOD: Personal individual experience
GOOD MUSIC: Soul healing
TECHNO: Frequency exploration
TRANCE: Knowledge of the eye
ELECTRO: Cousin of Techno
HOUSE: Cousin of Techno
GROOVE: In sync with life
QUANTITY: Over rated
QUALITY: Under rated
SPIRIT: Requires freedom
NORTHAMERICA: Unifyed
EUROPE: Unifyed
LATINAMERICA: Unifying
PAST: Be of it
PRESENT: Be in it
FUTURE: Shape it

or sorry, was it something more like this you asked for?;

Experience your personal God
Heal your soul with good music
Explore frequencies with Techno
Know yourself during Trance
….?

Best wishes <3 /// Cari Lekebusch*
